Since the medium's early days, photographers have endeavoured to document the world around them, imbuing their images with a sense of place. From distant lands to local street scenes, our environment continues to be a generative space to observe human behaviour and our changing world. Over the last few years, Street photographers Gregory Earle, Natsuki Yasuda and Alex Turner have turned their lens on Taiwan - a city where they exist as both insiders and outsiders. Here, they tell Capture about their work, engaging with Web3 and how Taiwan inspires them.

Alex Turner

I was born in New Zealand and spent my early years between the United States and Australia before moving to Taiwan in 2018. Moving around and living in different cultures inspired me to find a way to capture my changing surroundings. I quickly became immersed in photography as a tool to document my unique perspective on the world. I believe it's very important to have a creative outlet to express your thoughts and feelings - it enables you to better understand yourself and the world around us.

I initially moved to Taiwan on a working holiday visa, but the experience turned into an ongoing love affair with this beautiful country, its culture, people and natural environment. One of my favourite images is a shot I took at night from a temple high on the mountain in Nanshijao, looking across the expanse of New Taipei City and Taipei. It shows thousands of lit windows from the houses and apartments below. It captures the spirit of Taipei, the unity, intimacy, and electricity of all of these lives living together in a small place. This photo gives me a remarkable feeling. Another thing I love about Taiwan is the fantastic photography community, especially in Taipei. Photographers here are always willing to share locations and tips, and I am always inspired to search out new places to capture my unique vision.

“I think that NFTs will be a very powerful way for photographers to build their network, their visibility to the world, and most importantly, get their hard work seen and appreciated by others.” Alex Turner

I'm new to Web3 and NFTs. I believe NFTs will be a very powerful way for photographers to build their network and, most importantly, get their hard work seen and appreciated by others. It's important to stay current with the industry and society.

"People in Taiwan are very expressive, and you can really feel the energy of the culture.” Natsuki Yasuda

I started taking pictures as a high school student. Those memories are lifelong treasures; I wouldn't be making work today without those photos. Alongside my job, I work in the tourism industry; I make time to photograph everyday life in the city. I carry a small camera in my commuting bag, and if a place interests me, I will stop and take a picture. I often shoot at night because, for me, that is when the city feels most alive. I'm constantly walking and discovering new sights, relationships and food, which inspire my work. People in Taiwan are very expressive, and you can really feel the energy of the culture. I love to be surrounded by people. I love to talk, eat together and stay connected.

Daido Moriyama's "records" is an important inspiration for me. I was initially surprised to see photographs of the city and local people and the power his work has to revive memories. I always want to take pictures like that.

I discovered photography in high school in Toronto, Canada, when I began working in a photo lab. I would shoot a roll of film a day and develop it the next. Through trial and error, I learned how to take photos that are meaningful to me. I've wanted to return to Asia for a long time. I'm so inspired by the energy and the chaotic way people live here.

As a street photographer, I'm interested in photographing people going about the day to day lives, uncovering the beauty in the banal. I want to make viewers curious and ask questions about what they don't see as much as what they do. The practice involves a lot of walking and luck, so it starts with coffee and continues until I feel my luck has run out. Henri Cartier-Bresson is a big inspiration for me. He had an introverted approach, like myself, and also liked observing people without giving directions.

Working with Capture is my first experience with Web3 and NFTs, and I'm so excited about the possibilities it offers creatives and their work.

Together, these three image-makers infuse their storytelling of Taiwan with new ideas and alternative perspectives. Their raw and passionate energy pushes beyond the image frame and represents a way of being in harmony with your environment and using the camera to forge a deeper relationship with our world.
